Vision Asia-Philippines football program to kick-off in Cebu

By Judy Flores | www.panaynewsphilippines.com

CEBU City – In support of the Vision Asia program of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) will launch its version of the program this month in Cebu.

Vision Asia is a program initiated by AFC President Mohammed Bin Hammam to raise the standard of football in the Asian region through a holistic approach, said Edward Magallona, who heads the grassroots aspect of the PFF.

Magallona, who was in Dumaguete for yesterday’s launching of the 1st PFF/Milo Football Festival Caravan said the idea of Vision Asia is to help the different countries in the region develop their individual structures best suited to their individual environment.

At the same time, the program also looks at strengthening the administrative structure of national football associations, like the Philippine Football Federation, to complement with other Asian countries, he added.

Magallona said the AFC has visited different countries in Asia to assess and propose changes in the national associations, such as in areas like administration, officiating, grassroots, and mainly competition.

A few countries have already adopted the Vision Asia concept, like China and Vietnam, he added.

Recently, the Philippines sent a delegation to Malaysia for a working study tour on the Vision Asia program after an assessment team had visited the PFF.

According to Magallona, some areas in the PFF needed to be overhauled completely including the federation’s constitution and by-laws.

Negros Oriental Provincial Sports Coordinator Ernesto Ravello has thrown his support Vision Asia-Philippines, saying that if Asian countries patterned their football programs to complement each other, then it would make the region more competitive in international competitions.

He said if the objective is to make Asia one of the power blocs in football, then there will have to be changes in certain areas of football development in the region.

Magallona, meanwhile, said he believes that adopting the Vision Asia program would make countries in the Asian more competitive in famed competitions such as the World Cup.

Africa is already participating in the World Cup and Asia is getting there through China, Japan and Korea, he said. But there is still a lot of hard work to do to be at par with other countries, he stressed.

According to Magallona, the impact of the Vision Asia-Philippines program cannot be felt and seen overnight, but there is no way to go but up.

While the Philippines is not quite competitive enough in the grading of the FIFA, it has earned at least 10 to 12 steps higher in recent ranking, he said.

On the other hand, Magallona disclosed that on May 27, the PFF would launch the Hyundai Cup in Manila to be participated in by club teams in Luzon.

Depending on resources and logistics, the same event might just be held in the Visayas and Mindanao.

Hopefully, this will jumpstart the formation of a semi-professional football league in the country, he said. (PNA)

Paeng sets new National Bowling Record

Paeng NepomucenoSix-time World Champion Paeng Nepomuceno established a new national record for four games yesterday at the 41st Manila Tenpin Bowling Association at Bowling Inn in Taft Avenue.

Nepomuceno, who was on a hot streak, rolled 12 consecutive strikes for a perfect 300 game in his first game during the singles event qualifying, he then rolled eleven more strikes in his next game which was an almost perfect game of 299 followed by 268 and 256 for a new national record of 1123 or an average of 280.75 per game.

Paeng representing the Philippine Bowling Congress and Nutrilite rolled 23 consecutive strikes in the first two games only to be stopped by a stubborn 7 pin. His first three game total of 867 is also a personal high said Nepomuceno.

Paeng erased the previous record of 1103 set in 1994 by former national team member Marcus Reyes.

“I am happy that at 52 years old, I am still competitive and I surprised myself with the way I bowled yesterday and am happy that I did it in a Philippine Bowling Congress Open tournament,” Nepomuceno said.

Paeng, at 52, is showing no signs of slowing down. He was honored by the Guinness World Records a few months ago for the third time for having the most career world titles: 118.

Paeng, who is the USBC (United States Bowling Congress) International Ambassador for bowling said, “Bowling has been my passion. I have been bowling for almost four decades and will continue to bowl as long as I can”.

“Not even my age is going to slow me down. One of the reasons why I am still in great shape is because of my fitness regimen” said Nepomuceno who still sports a six pack abdomen.

“I work out at the gym four to five times a week, I go cycling and swimming for my cardiovascular activity when not in the gym and I also believe in nutrition supplementation.”

Paeng is the only bowler in the world to have won the World Cup four times and was named FIQ Bowling Athlete of the Millennium and holds three unbroken records in the Guinness Book of World records. Being a hall of famer, his seven foot image is displayed in the entrance of the International Bowling Hall of Fame and Museum.

Paeng was named World Bowling Writers ‘World Bowler of the Year three times and is the first inductee in its Hall of Fame.(http://goodnewspilipinas.com)

Pacman bobbleheads in Giants-Padres game

Manny Pacquiao, the person and the bobblehead doll, were all over the AT&T Park in San Francisco as the Pinoy boxing icon was the honorary guest in the Major League Baseball game between the San Francisco Giants and the San Diego Padres.

Boxing’s pound-for-pound champion whose visit was part of “Filipino Heritage Night” hosted by the Giants threw the ceremonial pitch for the Giants-Padres baseball match.

Giants Cy Young winner Tim Lincecum, who is half-Filipino, was behind the plate t

o catch Pacquiao’s pitch.

The “Filipino Heritage Night” is an annual event hosted by the Giants to honor the Bay Area’s

 large Filipino-American population.

Lucky fans also received limited edition Pacquiao bobblehead dolls which are now up for auction on Ebay.

Pacquiao was such a lucky charm for the Giants, his presence sold 11,000 extra tickets, which is better compared to last year’s Filipino night that drew a group of 5,000.

The event raised $50,000 that will be used by the Giants’ for their charity works, and last but not the least, San Francisco won the game, 8-3.

Pacman is in the homestretch of his three-month training for his scheduled fight against Englishman Ricky Hatton on May 2 (May 3 in Manila) at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Ve

gas.

At stake in their 12-round bout are Hatton’s International Boxing Organization and Ring Magazine world light welterweight titles.
