Physician Licensure Examination February 2010 Results

The Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) has announced the results of the February 2010 Physician Licensure Examination given by the Board of Medicine in the cities of Manila and Cebu.  There are 621 out of 1,344 examinees passed while one out of 11 passed the preliminary examination.

Registration for the issuance of Professional Identification Card (ID) and Certificate of Registration will start on March 2, 2010 but not later than March 5, 2010. Those who will register are required to bring the following: duly accomplished Oath Form or Panunumpa ng Propesyonal, current Community Tax Certificate (cedula), two passport size picture (colored with white background and complete name tag), one 1”x1” picture (colored with white background and complete name tag), two metered documentary stamps, and one short brown envelope with name and profession; and to pay the Initial Registration Fee of R600 and Annual Registration Fee of P450 for 2010-2013. Successful examinees should personally register and sign in the Roster of Registered Professionals.

The oathtaking for the successful examinees as well as the previous ones who have not taken their Oath of Professional will be held before the Board on March 14, 2010, 1 p.m., at the Plenary Hall of the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC), Roxas Boulevard, Manila.

Registration for membership with the Philippine Medical Association (PMA) will start on March 2, 2010.

3 million tourists visit RP in 2009

Three million tourists from abroad will have visited the country by the end of the year.

Tourism Undersecretary Oscar Payabyab said there could have been a lot more but for the global recession that is just beginning to wane.

According to Payabyab, the Department of Tourism (DOT) originally targeted five million foreign tourists. The lower projection, he explained, was due “to the contraction of outbound tourist traffic in our usual market, particularly Japan and Korea.

“The increased arrivals from China and Taiwan have enabled the country to make up for the loss,” he said.

He acknowledged that the severe typhoons had a negative effect, on the tourism industry.

“Baguio City, for instance, lost over 2,000 domestic tourists since it had to forego hosting the Advertising Congress because of the floodings and landslides,” he said.

He pointed out that most foreign tourists plan their visit months in advance. Thus, he added, the Maguindanao massacre in November could not have stopped those who had already booked their flights.

“But it may have discouraged those who were still planning their vacations,” he said.

He congratulated the media for the positive role they play in the tourism industry. From their reports, he said, foreign tourists learn where these violent incidents occur, and they are able to avoid these places.

He said that DoT keeps assuring visitors that the country’s popular destinations remain safe.

Also, Payabyab said, domestic tourism received a boost from the so-called holiday economics. He explained that the President always cluster holidays, and that enables workers to plan their vacations around the long weekends.

Among domestics tourists, Cebu City is the most visited destination, with Camarines Sur coming in second. In fact, the Bicol province was number one, with over one million local tourists recorded in the first nine months.

The third most favored destination is Baguio City and the rest of the Cordillera Autonomous Region.

Other favorites are Bohol and Palawan, which both achieved double digit growth in domestic tourism. (Story courtesy of PNA)

RP wins HSBC Young Entrep Top Prize

The Philippine team of Karl Satinitigan and Timothy Huelva won the “Best of the Best Award” grand prize and a cash prize of HK$100,000 in the HSBC Young Entrepreneur Awards in Hong Kong.

The duo from the Ateneo de Manila University won over other champion teams from Hong Kong (which won the Diamond Award), Bangladesh (which won the Jade Award), Thailand, Malaysia and Brunei.

The YEA is an annual business plan writing competition that challenges young people in Asia to work together to create innovative and commercially-viable business ideas.

The board of judges were led by Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corp. Limited CEO Sandy Flockhart, HSBC deputy chairman Laura Cha, DHL Express (Hong Kong) Limited co-founder and Chairman Emeritus Po Chung, McKinsey & Company Hong Kong managing partner Dr. Allen Fung and HSBC Limited head of Global Banking in Asia Pacific Frank Slevin.

Early this year, the six teams from the six countries bested a total of 902 undergraduate college student teams from all over Asia in order to compete here in the regional finals in Hong Kong.

One of the judges, Hong Kong businessman Po Chung, was so impressed with the Philippine team’s presentation and answers to judges’ queries, he surprised the audience by uncharacteristically asking: “Okay, when can I invest?”

Accompanied by the Ateneo’s Gokongwei School of Management Dean Prof. Rudy Ang and HSBC Philippine executives Johanna Garcia and Cat Avelino, the Philippine champion team used the team name “Team Beleavers” and its project of “Areka! Leaf Tableware” is an eco-iconic product using coconut leaves from Quezon province as a proposed replacement for non-biodegradable plastic and Styrofoam food containers in fast-food chains.

The Ateneans were fourth-year BS Legal Management students who just graduated this March.

The closest challenger to the Philippine team was the articulate Hong Kong team comprised of three freshmen students from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, with their proposed alginate burgers (named “NuBurgers”) and hoping to supply the USA market with this healthier alternative to traditional obesity-inducing hamburgers. Prof. Rudy Ang said: “I feel like Roger Federer in tennis, because the Ateneo has been representing the Philippines already for five years in this prestigious HSBC competition and it’s only now that we had won. In the Philippine competition this year, our Ateneo students had teams that won the first, second and third places.” In the last six years of this HSBC competition, the Ateneo has represented the Philippines five times while the University of the Philippines had competed here for the country once.

The judges in the Philippine competition in March this year included top business leaders like HSBC Philippines CEO Mark Watkinson, SGV chairman David Balangue, Asian Institute of Management president Francis Estrada, DBP president Reynaldo David, JG Summit Holdings president John Gokongwei, Jr., Ayala Group CEO Jaime Augusto de Ayala, Store Specialists, Inc. Armless Pinay is a licensed pilot in US

A 26-year-old Filipina can fly a plane, drive a car, and is also a Taekwondo black belt holder. Jessica Cox who was born without arms can do all these and more.

In 2008, Cox became the nation’s first and only Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) licensed pilot to fly an airplane using only her feet.

“I was flying about an hour and a half out and I knew it was just gonna be me, the airplane, God and the rest of the landscape so that was incredible independent experience, the most that I’ve ever experienced,” Cox said.

Born in Tucson, Arizona in 1983, doctors had no explanation why Cox was born without arms.

It was Cox’s Filipina mother who trained her to become independent.

“Kasi hinanda ko yung mga toys in her crib, nilipat ko na yung mga toys niya sa footside para yung mga balls, yun ang beginning ko sa kanyang foot stimulation," said her mother, Ines.

Today, Cox drives on her own, brushes her hair, makes calls and sends text messages on her cellphone.

"Being a Filipina is a huge part of, I believe, who I am, and being very independent and being somebody who goes out there and does a lot of things without having fear," she said.

Aside from being a pilot, Cox is also a motivational speaker inspiring Filipinos and Americans.

“She was able to show us that no matter what, if you put your mind into it, you can do it," said Marylou Natividad.

Jose Rizal statue, park to rise in Australia

A major Philippine park and our foremost national heroe’s statue will soon be replicated in New South Wales, Australia.

The Philippines’ Department of Foreign Affairs has revealed that a 2.2-hectare property in the city of Campbelltown in New South Wales will be developed into the Rizal Park in Australia.

Consul General Eva Betita of the Philippine Consulate General in Sydney said the Rizal Park will rise in what used to be an empty reserve owned by the city government.

So how did this project come to fruition? It all started In 1988, when a group of Filipino-Australians and friends petitioned the city council of Campbelltown to name it Rizal Park.

The project is the brainchild of the Rizal Park Movement, a group of five Filipino-Australian associations that banded together in 2006 with the common vision of making the reserve into a park.

In June 2007, Campbelltown formally designated the reserve as a park to be funded by the city council.

The Philippine Consulate General in Sydney has been assisting the Rizal Park Movement’s project through endorsements and gathering support from other Filipino-Australian associations throughout the state of New South Wales.

The Rizal Park project received A$120,000 Federal Government grant from Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, to be used for the initial construction of the park, including a playground and picnic facilities for use by the general public.

In addition, the Campbelltown city council will provide another A$140,000 for further improvements.

The construction plan for the park was presented to Campbelltown Mayor Russell Matheson, Consul General Betita, Rizal Park Movement chair Lourdes Kaiser, Knight Commander Maximilio Lopez of the Knights of Rizal, and members of the Filipino-Australian Community in Campbelltown last May 29.

The Rizal Park Movement plans to further improve the park with landscaping, shade structures, barbecue facilities, car park, and a cycle way.

The Order of the Knights of Rizal in New South Wales has also committed to commission a statue of Dr. Jose Rizal to be placed prominently in the area.

Campbelltown is a prosperous industrial-agricultural city and hosts the third largest concentration of Filipino-Australians numbering 4,108. (http://goodnewspilipinas.com)

Spain cites PGMA, Pacman in Forbes 100

Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and boxing champion Manny Pacquiao have been cited by separate groups in recognition of their achievements in various fields.

PGMA and Peruvian novelist Mario Vargas Llosa were awarded the top prize in Spain for their efforts to promote the Spanish language and culture. Mrs Arroyo was granted the Don Quixote of the Mancha Award for her administration’s efforts to reintroduce Spanish language training in public schools in the Philippines, a former Spanish colony of around 90 million people.

Manny Pacquiao was named in Forbes 100 list of Most Powerful Celebrities. He is ranked 57th in the magazine’s list, led by Angelina Jolie, with the No. 1 spot and Oprah Winfrey ranked 2nd, Madonna 3rd, and Beyonce Knowles 4th. Gemino Abad wins Italy’s Top literary prize

One of the Philippines foremost contemporary poets and critics is set to be awarded Italy’s most coveted literary achievement in the Foreign Author category, the “Prize Premio Feronia - Città di Fiano 2009. for his work In Ordinary Time”

Gémino H. Abad will be conferred the distinction during the Nomination Ceremony on July 11, 2009 at the Castle of Fiano Romano, an historic place just outside Rome. Below is the letter sent to Mr. Abad by the Committe President of the Prize Premio Feronia - Città di Fiano 2009, Filippo Bettini.

Dear Professor Gémino H. Abad,

“We are particularly proud to inform you that our Committee has awarded you the Prize Premio Feronia - Città di Fiano 2009, for the section ‘Foreign Author.’

“The Prize, first created 16 years ago, has an antagonistic character as compared to other major literary awards in our Country, that are tightly bound to marketing strategies of dominant publishing houses. As an example, all official meetings of our Committee are open-door to guarantee the maximum of integrity.

Gémino H. Abad hails from Cebu. He earned his B.A. English from the University of the Philippines in 1964 and Ph.D. in English literature from the University of Chicago in 1970. He served the University of the Philippines in various capacities: as Secretary of the University, Secretary of the Board of Regents, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Director of the U.P. Institute of Creative Writing. For many years, he also taught English, comparative literature and creative writing at U.P. Diliman.

Abad co-founded the Philippine Literary Arts Council (PLAC) which published Caracoa, a poetry journal in English. His other works include Fugitive Emphasis (poems, 1973); In Another Light (poems and critical essays, 1976); A Formal Approach to Lyric Poetry (critical theory, 1978); The Space Between (poems and critical essays, 1985); Poems and Parables (1988); Index to Filipino Poetry in English, 1905-1950 (with Edna Zapanta Manlapaz, 1988) and State of Play (letter-essays and parables, 1990). He edited landmark anthologies of Filipino poetry in English, among them Man of Earth (1989), A Native Clearing (1993) and A Habit of Shores: Filipino Poetry and Verse from English, ’60s to the ’90s (1999).

The University of the Philippines has elevated Abad to the rank of University Professor, the highest academic rank awarded by the university to an exemplary faculty member. He currently sits on the Board of Advisers of the U.P. Institute of Creative Writing and teaches creative writing as Emeritus University Professor at the College of Arts and Letters, U.P. Diliman.

Bacolod's 1st Inasal Festival sets 3 contests

BACOLOD City — The first Manokan Country Inasal Festival on May 15 to 20 will have three contests: Best Manokan Stall, Inasal Eating, and Logo Design.

Stalls at the Manokan Country are qualified to join. The Best Booth will receive P5,000; Most Colorful - P3,000; Most Relevant to the Theme - P3,000; and Best in Staff Service and Support - P3,000.

The Inasal Eating Contest, on the other hand, is open to all. Each contestant has to eat a specified number of inasal “sagad to the bones.” Prizes at stake are P1,500, P1,000 and P700 for the first three winners.

Meanwhile, the Chicken Inasal Logo Design Contest must reflect the theme, “Bacolod Chicken Inasal Goes to the World,” that depicts the inasal as a unique delicacy, tourist attraction and a source of livelihood for many Bacolodnons.

Entry forms for the logo design contest is available at the City Tourism Office. Deadline is on or before April 14. Prizes are P3,000, P2,500, and P2,000 plus plaques and gift certificates each for the first three winners. A P500-consolation prize will also be given to the non-winners.

The Inasal Festival will vie for the Guinness Book of World Record’s longest barbecue grill by putting up six kilometers of chicken barbecue grill along the Manokan Country and reclamation area./PN

Call centers in Iloilo

ILOILO CITY — Two call centers are eyeing to expand here, according to Mayor Jerry P. Treñas. Mr. Treñas said call center executives would visit several schools to determine the availability of workers as well as look for possible locations. The mayor said another call center firm would soon open a 1,600-seat facility in the city. Iloilo is already hosting three call centers — Callbox, ePLDT Ventus, and TeleTech. There are also six Philippine Economic Zone Authority-accredited site: Amigo Mall and Robinsons Place in Iloilo City proper; SM City in Mandurriao which hosts TeleTech; Gaisano City Mall in LaPaz district; and the Iloilo Commercial Development Corp. building which houses ePLDT Ventus in Molo district. Mr. Treñas said Robinsons Place and Gaisano City are still open to new call centers.

St. La Salle building in global best list book

The centerpiece of De La Salle University along Taft Avenue in Manila has achieved what no other architectural structure in the Philippines has done ever before.

St. La Salle Building is the one and only entry from the Philippines in the book “1001 Buildings You Must See See Before You Die: The World’s Architectural Masterpieces.”

The book authored by Mark Irving and published by Quintessence Books is a careful selection of 1001 wonders of architecture that spans traditions throughout the world, from adobe pueblos to the latest Pritzker Prize winners.

St. La Salle is a neoclassical building that was built from 1920 to 1924 as the new campus of De La Salle College. It was built due to the lack of space of the original campus in Paco, Manila and need of the college of a larger campus to accommodate its increasing student population. A competition to design the building was won by renowned architect, Tomas Mapua.

It was once used as the grade school and high school building back when the college was still offering those levels. It has a chapel occupying the second and third levels of the south wing of the building. Originally built as a three-storey structure, a fourth level was added in the 1990s for the Open House of the De La Salle Brothers. The building is occupied by the College of Business and Economics.

The structure was severely damaged during the Allied liberation of Manila in World War II in the Philippines. Numerous civilians took refuge in the building thinking that its thick concrete walls would protect them from anything but a direct hit. On February 12, 1945, sixteen Brothers and several other civilians were massacred by drunken Japanese troops inside the school chapel at the second floor. Restoration of the building after the war took two years and cost 246,883 pesos.

Mall guard returns P2.4M in cash, checks

Trinidad Quintana, an SM City Baliuag security guard found and returned a clutch bag containing P2.4 million worth of checks and P35,000.

Quintana, a four month old employee with the RDC Security Agency was on a routine check at the mall’s food court when he saw the clutch bag on a table.

The 27-year old said he initially kept watch on the clutch bag, thinking that its owner might have gone to the comfort room. With nobody taking it after a few minutes, he then asked a couple on another table if it was theirs.

Since its owner apparently had already left, Quintana took the clutch bag and brought it to his office.

Beverly Cruz, public relations officer of SM City Baliuag, said the clutch bag contained at least seven checks worth P2.4 million, P35,000 in cash and other valuables.

The bag was later returned to its owner, a certain Matias Cruz.

When asked why he returned the bag, Quintana said it was not his and it’s part of his job to do so.

Quintana added that his parents had taught him to be honest, explaining that he felt good after the owner got the bag.

The SM City Baliuag management commended Quintana for his honesty.

The third of nine siblings from Leyte, Quintana aspires to become a police officer. He finished his Bachelor of Science in Criminology at the Tacloban-Leyte Colleges in 2007.(http://goodnewspilipinas.com)

‘Project Drive’ drives through Iloilo

Project DRIVE (Dagdag Regular Income Via Entrepreneurship), intended to extend micro-financing to the spouses and immediate family members of drivers and conductors of public utility vehicles, will be launched in Iloilo City.

The Philippine Postal Savings Bank, (PPSB) Inc. which spearheads the campaign, is targeting from 60 to 100 participants to attend its launching at Grand Hotel, on April 29, from 2 – 5 in the afternoon.

PPSB Senior Manager Alfredo Tayo III, said Project DRIVE is the Arroyo government’s response to the unpredictable increase in price of oil and gas by providing a safety net to public transport cooperatives or associations.

Tayo said DRIVE is a micro-finance project open to spouses and immediate family members of drivers and conductors of PUVs who are accredited or registered transport cooperatives or associations by the Office of the Transportation Cooperatives (OTC) and the Land Transportation and Franchising Board (LTFRB).

In this Micro-Finance Facility, each transport cooperative or association can avail of interest free and no collateral capital seed fund amounting to P5,000 per beneficiary or a maximum of P150,000 for 30 beneficiaries for a term of one year.

President Gloria Arroyo has approved the release of P500 million for the project taken from VAT proceeds and released by the Budget Department directly to the PPSB.

Tayo said the Transport Cooperative/Association assisted by the OTC and the LTFRB shall establish a criteria for screening eligible spouses and immediate family members of drivers and conductors.

When the first 30 beneficiaries pass the selection criteria, the transport cooperative/association should identify viable livelihood project to be undertaken by each beneficiary including the financing requirement and prepare a list of livelihood projects to be financed by the PPSB.

The cooperative or association shall then prepare the loan documentation and application in accordance with the checklist of requirements of PPSB, and then submit the loan application to the nearest PPSB branch.

The PPSB will have more details on this scheme, as they conduct the information dissemination campaign, Tayo said. (PPSB/PIA6/ESS)

Pinoy lawyer wins award in US

MANILA, Philippines - Environmental lawyer Tony Oposa will receive the International Environmental Law Award from the Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL) at a luncheon ceremony in Washington on April 21.

Oposa is cited as “one of Asia’s leading voices in the global arena of environmental law.”

“His work is internationally known for establishing at the highest Philippine Court of Law the principle of inter-generational responsibility – the right to sue governments on behalf of future generations to stop environmental damage,” an announcement from CIEL said.

An activist working on local, national, and international levels, he has worked tirelessly to protect the country’s natural resources. His work includes a decade-long fight with the government to clean up and rehabilitate Manila Bay, curb over-fishing in the Visayan Sea, fight the misappropriation of the country’s forest resources, and establish the School of the Seas, a learning center for sustainable living.

Oposa said the award “belongs to us all – the Filipino… It is my dream that one day, our collective efforts and passions will ‘infect’ the rest of our people and that one day, we – all the Filipinos, with our native genius for Nature and the natural sciences and arts – will be the beacons of light for the rest of the world.”

The CIEL award recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the effort to achieve solutions to environmental problems through international law and institutions.

CIEL is a nonprofit organization working to use international law and institutions to protect the environment, promote human health, and ensure a just and sustainable society. It was founded in 1989 and is based in Washington.
